"The Stations of the Way of the Cross - Located on the north and south walls of the nave of the church. The stations are one of the more familiar Catholic devotional exercises in which participants focus their prayer on representations of fourteen scenes of Christ's passion. The practice of "pilgrimage" to the Holy Land began very early in the history of our church. However, not all Christians could made the journey. By the twelfth century the fervor of the Crusades and a heightened devotion of the Passion created a heavy demand in Europe for pictorial representations of the last events of Jesus' life. The Franciscans, who were charged with custody of the shrines in the Holy Land in 1342, saw it as part of their mission to propagate devotion to these places. For many years there was a considerable variety in both the number and the tile of these "stations"; the current number of fourteen dates to the sixteenth century. Modern liturgists have emphasized that devotion to the Passion is incomplete without reference to the Resurrection and to this end have fostered the addition of a "fifteenth station." Noe that the framing and backgrounds of the figures are truly Gothic with their spires, turrets, high gables, and pointed arches." ~ History of the church
