This U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey benchmark disk is located on the abutment of the Mercer Street Bridge over French Creek in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The location is easily accessible from the sidewalk on the south side of the bridge, and there is parking available on the north side of Mercer Street. The mark was found in good condition. It looks like the disk was originally stamped "N 62," but the "N" was crossed out and an "L" was stamped above it.
The description on the NGS data sheet from 1941 says:
"AT MEADVILLE, ON U.S. HIGHWAY 6, 54 FEET WEST OF THE WEST END OF THE MEAD-PENN IRON WORKS COMPANY BUILDING, AT 230-FOOT SPAN TRUSS BRIDGE OVER FRENCH CREEK, IN THE SECOND STONE STEP FROM THE TOP OF THE SOUTHEAST WING WALL, 6 FEET SOUTHWEST OF TWIN POWERLINE POLES, 26 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE HIGHWAY AND ABOUT 1 FOOT LOWER THAN THE HIGHWAY. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED L 62 1935."
An additional description from 1982 says:
"RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. 0.3 KM (0.2 MI) NORTH ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 19 FROM THE JUNCTION WITH U.S. HIGHWAY 322 IN MEADVILLE, THEN, 0.2 KM (0.1 MI) WEST TO A BRIDGE OVER FRENCH CREEK AND THE MARK ON THE RIGHT IN THE SECOND STEP OF THE SOUTHEAST ABUTMENT OF THE BRIDGE. 7.9 METERS (26.0 FT) SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD, 1.8 METERS (6.0 FT) SOUTHWEST OF THE TWIN POWER POLES. THE MARK IS 0.5 M BELOW THE ROAD."
