RECREATIEGEBIED IXENHEUVEL
Een brokje geschiedenis...
Tussen 10 en 20 miljoen jaar geleden situeerde onze regio zich in de overgangszone van de zee naar het vasteland. Op een reliefkaart van België zien we nabij de zuidgrens van Vlaanderen een aaneenschakeling van heuvelzones waarvan de absolute hoogte naar het oosten toe stelselmatig daalt. Deze heuvels moeten we interpreteren als zandbanken voor het strand van de
toenmalige Diestiaanzee. In onze streken zijn de Ixenheuvel in Putte, de Beerzelberg en de berg van Heist-op-den-Berg in de Netevallei resten van de uitlopers in het zandbankensysteem. Deze zandbanken staken periodisch boven het zeeniveau uit zodat de zuurstof uit de lucht in de poriën tussen de zandkorrels kon doordringen. Als gevolg van erosie profileren deze zandbanken zich nu als getuigenheuvels die van het bestaan en de begrenzing van de Diestiaanzee in het huidige landschap nog steeds getuigen.
Van de gemeente voor de gemeenschap... Op 10 oktober 1974 kocht de gemeente de hoeve Den Wijngaert aan alsook de omliggende gronden op de Ixenheuvel. Dit met als doel de aanleg van een
sport- en recreatiegebied. Er werden vervolgens voetbalterreinen, tennisterreinen
en een speeltuin aangelegd. In 1977 verbouwde de gemeente de hoeve tot lokaal voor de wipmaatschappij Putte-Dorp en de basketbalclub. Zij bleven resp. tot in 1985 en 1987 op deze site. Sinds 1982 herbergt de hoeve de Putse heemkundige kring Het Molenijzer. In de loop der jaren breidde het museum stelselmatig uit tot een volwaardig heemmuseum. Ook de lokalen van de tennisclub en de voetbal werden ondertussen gerenoveerd of uitgebreid.
Sinds 2012 is de hele omgeving heraangelegd en beschikt de site over een modern aangelegd speelterrein, openlucht amfitheater, sportinfrastructuur en parkeergelegenheden.

IXEN HILL RECREATION AREA
A chunk of history...
Between 10 and 20 million years ago, our region was situated in the transition zone from the sea to the mainland. On a relief map of Belgium, near the southern border of Flanders, we see a succession of hill zones whose absolute height systematically decreases towards the east. We must interpret these hills as sandbanks for the beach of the
then Diestian Sea. In our regions, the Ixen hill in Putte, the Beerzelberg and the mountain of Heist-op-den-Berg in the Nete Valley are remnants of the foothills in the sandbank system. These sandbanks periodically rose above sea level so that oxygen from the air could penetrate the pores between the sand grains. As a result of erosion, these sandbanks now profile as witness mounds that continue to testify to the existence and boundary of the Diestian Sea in today's landscape.
From the municipality for the community On October 10, 1974, the municipality purchased the farmstead Den Wijngaert as well as the surrounding land on the Ixen hill. This with the aim of creating a
sports and recreation area. There were then soccer fields, tennis courts
and a playground were constructed. In 1977, the municipality converted the farm into premises for the Putte-Dorp seesaw company and the basketball club. They remained on this site until 1985 and 1987, respectively. Since 1982, the farmhouse has housed the Putte Hemispheric Circle Het Molenijzer. Over the years, the museum systematically expanded to become a fully-fledged history museum. Meanwhile, the premises of the tennis club and soccer were also renovated or expanded.
Since 2012, the entire area has been redeveloped and the site boasts a modern playground, open-air amphitheater, sports infrastructure and parking facilities.
