Confolens town hall square

Its name dates back to the 19th century. Before that, it was known as "Place du Minage", then "Place de la Commune" during the French Revolution.

A small central square
Its first name originated from the grain market, or minage, which stood above the halles. At that time, it occupied half of the present-day square, the rest being taken up by houses. Depending on the era, the square hosted both judicial and festive events: pillory exhibitions, capital executions, traveling circuses and cinemas, and the frairie on the first Sunday in May.

New building, new look
The square's appearance changed in 1892, with the construction of new covered market halls to replace a dilapidated building. After several aborted projects, the municipality took advantage of the fire in the Vallet building, located in the group of houses perpendicular to the town hall, to buy back the complex. The halles designed by architect Wiart were inaugurated in 1894, and the square took on its current appearance. It is still the focal point of major events, such as the Confolens Festival.
