Prolific Italian artist Venanzo Crocetti spent the better part of the twentieth century executing various government and religious commissions. These included the Door of the Sacraments at St. Peter’s cathedral in the Vatican (this is the main door that tourists enter) and the Monument to Maternity in Teramo. Among his many other works is this lovely statue of a young dancing student completed in 1957. Dancing had become a recurring theme in Crocetti’s work since the 1950s.
The stamp was part of a set issued in 1987 showing various public sculptures in the city of San Marino, promoted as an 'open air museum.’ Officially, sixteen pieces comprise this ‘museum,’ nine of which are pictured on the stamp set.
