Counted among the masterpieces of Pisan Romanesque, it was founded before the year 1000, in the 9th or 10th century and has been documented since 1032. It belonged to the monks of San Benedetto and from 1092 to 1409 it was the seat of the Vallombrosan monks.

In the first half of the 12th century the church was enlarged in ways similar to the contemporary Cathedral, and in 1149 the church was consecrated by Pope Eugene III. The façade was built between 1148 and 1165, although it was not completed until the 14th century.

During the construction of the cathedral, the faculty to exercise worship and public functions in the great solemnities of San Paolo was granted to Ripa d'Arno.

At the end of the 12th century, the monastic rooms were completed, organized around two cloisters, one attached to the south side and the other behind the apse. The latter is the only thing that remains after the damage caused by the bombings of World War II, after which the cloisters were demolished for good, along with the bell tower. The marble facings of the north elevation and the left lateral arm of the transept can be dated to the mid-13th century.
In 1409 the church and the monastery were entrusted to Cardinal Landolfo Marramauro, and later to other high prelates who succeeded each other over the years. In 1552 the church passed to the command of the Grifoni family of San Miniato, who passed it on, from 1565, the church became a parish. Adjacent monks' cloister, now defunct, on the south side of the building.
The façade is protruding, with pilasters, five blind arches that enclose oculi or diamonds, and three portals in the lower register. In the upper register are three orders of loggias, with sculpted rope frames and slender columns and round arches. It was built almost entirely between 1148 and 1665, but was not completed until the early 14th century.
Inside, the longitudinal arm is divided into three naves and seven sections by columns and slightly pointed arches, and illuminated by fine windows that open onto the thick walls of the clerestory. The ceiling is formed by a framework of light wood visible both in the central nave and in the side naves.
The baptismal font, the font and the sculpture with the Baptism of Christ are modern additions.
