Torre de Menagem do Castelo de Chaves

De características medievais e de planta retangular, foi construído sobre alicerces das muralhas romanas que envolviam a povoação, sofrendo importantes melhoramentos, quer por Suevos, Alanos e Visigodos, quer até por muçulmanos que conquistaram a fortificação no ano de 713. À época da reconquista cristã, o Castelo de Chaves foi tomado por D. Afonso III de Leão que determinou a sua reconstrução. A construção da Torre de Menagem e de outros melhoramentos da estrutura defensiva datam do reinado de D. Afonso III, tendo sido terminadas nos reinados de D. Dinis e de D. Afonso IV. Em 7 de dezembro de 1514 o Rei D. Manuel I visitou o castelo.
A Torre de Menagem mantém a feição medieval, de estilo gótico, de planta quadrangular e com uma altura de 28 metros, integrando quatro níveis, sendo que o térreo alberga a cisterna. Os restantes níveis são construídos em abóbadas de berço. A torre é coroada por merlões, ameias e pequenos balcões nos vértices, suportados por mata-cães. O acesso faz-se por escada em pedra e por porta em arco com moldura torada, encimada pelo brasão real com dezanove castelos.
São ainda visíveis alguns planos da barbacã medieval e do adarve, os quais apresentam uma altura significativa, onde se abre uma porta em arco de volta perfeita e no topo superior um balcão retangular e saliente com mata-cães. Todo o conjunto era circundado por muralhas abaluartadas da época da restauração da nacionalidade."

With medieval characteristics and a rectangular plan, it was built on the foundations of the Roman walls that surrounded the village, undergoing important improvements, whether by Suevi, Alans and Visigoths, or even by Muslims who conquered the fortification in 713. At the time of the Christian reconquest , the Castle of Chaves was taken over by King Afonso III of León, who ordered its reconstruction. The Torre de Menagem maintains its medieval appearance, in Gothic style, with a square plan and 28 meters high, comprising four levels, with the ground floor housing the cistern. The remaining levels are built in barrel vaults. The tower is crowned by merlons, battlements and small balconies at the vertices, supported by chokes. Access is via a stone staircase and an arched door with a twisted frame, surmounted by the royal coat of arms with nineteen castles.
Some planes of the medieval barbican and the battlement are still visible, which have a significant height, where a door opens in a round arch and at the top a rectangular and protruding balcony with matadors. The whole set was surrounded by bastioned walls from the time of the restoration of the nationality."
