The brewery was founded in 1825 by Laurens Smeets under the name Gulpener Bierbrouwerij de Gekroonde Leeuw. On September 14, 1826, the first top-fermented beer was delivered.
In 1840 his son Jan Michiel Smeets inherited the brewery. After he withdrew from the family business, the company was continued by his sons Guillaume and Edmond and his son-in-law Jean Renier Eduard Rutten. In 1896 these three started a company under the company name “E.Smeets”.
From 1902 Paul Rutten (I) assisted his father in the business and in 1922 the company was dissolved. The brewery was eventually continued by Paul Rutten under the name Rutten's Bierbrouwerij De Zwarte Ruiter. The name De Zwarte Ruiter came into the hands of a real estate magnate for some time. On December 10, 1931, Paul Rutten brought everything into a N.V., “N.V. Gulpener Beer Brewery, Distillery and Vinegar Factory.” Later, the name De Zwarte Ruiter was bought back and this brewery name was used on the Mestreechs Aajt beer. In the meantime, the brewery in Gulpen had been expanded and converted in 1913, just before the First World War, like many breweries in the Netherlands, because they wanted to produce bottom-fermented beer from then on.
In 1947 Paul Rutten (I) was succeeded by his son Paul Rutten (II). The brewery was renovated with, among other things, a fully automatic brewhouse (1966), a new vinegar factory, a distillery with a central warehouse (1971) and a wine hall. In the period 1978-1979 a major reorganization took place in which the B.V. Gulpener Vinegar and Mustard Factory and the B.V. Gulpener Bierbrouwerij continue their activities independently of each other. Paul Rutten (III) succeeded his father on June 27, 1980. Source: Wikipedia
