When strolling along Charles Bridge, one of Prague's major tourist attractions, everyone is likely to notice the small island called Kampa, which is separated from the left bank of the Vltava River by an artificial water channel called Certovka (Devil's Stream). The water channel was previously used to power a water mill but is now primarily used for tourist boat transport. Near one of the last arches of Charles Bridge, there is a footbridge over Certovka. The romantic view of the navigational channel is believed to be the reason why the place became popular among lovers locks.

"The Devil´s Stream, together with houses around, is one of the most beautiful places in Prague. It is an artificial channel, dividing the Kampa Island from the Lesser Town. The houses along the Devil´s Stream stand right by the river, which gave the channel the name Prague Venice. There is an old mill-wheel in the channel and it makes this place look even more picturesque.

The origin of the present name Devil´s Stream (“Certovka”) is unclear. A legend has it, that it is because of a woman of devilish nature, who used to live nearby, at the Maltese Square. In fact, the place was probably called after the house “At the Seven Devils”, standing there.

Several famous movies were shot at the Devil´s Stream and around it, for example Mission Impossible or Amadeus."
