En el área de la iglesia actual, se fundó en 1483 el monasterio de las monjas agustinas del Espíritu Santo, con una iglesia interna anexa que no da al canal de la Giudecca .

En las primeras décadas del 1500 , cuando se construyeron los cimientos del Zattere sobre el canal de la Giudecca, el monasterio también fue reestructurado radicalmente: la antigua iglesia fue destruida para dar paso al claustro y en 1506 se inició la construcción del edificio actual, con la fachada que da al canal.
