History
The neighborhood takes its name from the old Iglesia de la Merced , now disappeared, which was located in the Plaza de la Merced , the main public space in the neighborhood. There is evidence of the settlement of this area from earlier times. When the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs took place, the northern suburb, called Fontanalla , and still existing urban roads such as Madre de Dios street, were already formed . Later, Carlos III ordered the demolition of the old Nasrid wall to integrate the old suburb into the city.´
