Het luchtalarmsysteem werd oorspronkelijk tijdens de Koude Oorlog opgezet in het kader van de civiele verdediging. In Nederland werd in 1993 besloten het te vervangen door een moderner systeem. Het principe bleef echter gelijk: sirenes die in een bepaald gebied de bevolking konden waarschuwen bij grote calamiteiten. Ook de maandelijkse testen, die aanvankelijk na de val van de muur in 1989 waren stopgezet, werden hervat.

Verspreid over het hele land staan er ongeveer 4278 sirenes, die draadloos en onafhankelijk van elkaar aangezet kunnen worden vanuit de alarmcentrale van de regionale brandweer. De bevolking is van tevoren geïnstrueerd om in het geval dat de sirene gaat naar binnen te gaan, ramen en deuren te sluiten en radio of televisie aan te zetten. Op de aangewezen calamiteitenzenders kan de overheid verdere aanwijzingen geven, bijvoorbeeld dat een gebied geëvacueerd zal worden.

The air alarm system was originally set up during the Cold War as part of the civil defense. In the Netherlands it was decided in 1993 to replace it with a more modern system. However, the principle remained the same: sirens that could warn the population in a certain area of major calamities. Monthly tests, which were initially halted after the fall of the wall in 1989, were also resumed.

Across the country, there are approximately 4278 sirens, which can be activated wirelessly and independently from the emergency center of the regional fire brigade. The population has been instructed in advance to go in, in case the siren goes in, close windows and doors and turn on the radio or television. The government can give further instructions on the designated emergency stations, for example that an area will be evacuated.

This siren is located along the Graafsingel at the business area near Duiven. It is situated at the grounds of the company Synerlogic.
