Francesco Vernier fue elegido dux de la República de Venecia el 11 de junio de 1554, cuando contaba con 64 años. Durante los dos años que ocupó el cargo destacó por su severidad y templanza. Su delicada salud le obligaría a hacerse ayudar por dos personas para sus desplazamientos, falleciendo el 2 de junio de 1556.Su retrato oficial fue el último realizado por Tiziano como pintor de la Serenísima ya que los próximos dogos, Lorenzo y Girolamo Priuli, otorgaron el cargo a Girolamo di Tiziano y Tintoretto, respectivamente. Ese retrato oficial ocupó, según la costumbre, la sala del Gran Consejo del Palacio de los Dux. Fue destruido por un terrible incendio en 1577.

Francesco Vernier was elected Doge of the Republic of Venice on June 11, 1554, when he was 64 years old. During the two years that he held the position, he stood out for his severity and temperance. His delicate health would force him to be helped by two people to move around, and he died on June 2, 1556. His official portrait was the last made by Titian as a painter of the Serenissima since the next doges, Lorenzo and Girolamo Priuli, granted the charge to Girolamo di Titian and Tintoretto, respectively. That official portrait occupied, according to custom, the room of the Grand Council of the Palace of the Doges. It was destroyed by a terrible fire in 1577.
