Aligi Sassu died in the year 2000 at the age of 88. The prolific Italian painter and sculptor left behind a legacy of colorful paintings and lithographs, and lots and lots of horses - the horse being one of his favorite motifs. Five examples of this particular sculpture exist, the first being installed in the artist’s hometown of Milan around 1960. This one sits in the middle of a traffic circle in the city of San Marino, near the spot where the old train station used to be. It was erected in 1985.

The stamp was part of a set of ten stamps issued in 1987. Each featured a different piece of public sculpture scattered around the city. Collectively, this artwork has come to be known as the ‘open air museum.’ This statue is the largest of the pieces of artwork shown and is also on the highest value of the set. At 10,000 lire, I believe this was the highest face value of any postage stamp ever issued by the tiny republic.
