Horse racing took place in the Edinburgh area when the Royal Caledonian Hunt raced on the sands at Leith from 1777 to 1816. The move to the town of Musselburgh to the east of the city then occurred and racing has remained here since with the track running outside one of the oldest golf courses in the world, the nine hole Musselburgh Links, established in 1672.
The track hosted flat racing only until 1987 when a jumps track was laid out, meaning that racing now takes place all the year round. Since 1996 the track became known as Musselburgh, having been previously referred to in the press as Edinburgh.
Since 1995 facilities have been gradually improved, and it is now the second largest racing venue in Scotland after Ayr. The Edinburgh Gold Cup takes place in early June, and Ladies Day in early August.
The track can be found east of the town centre at Millhill with the coast of the Firth of Forth a few hundred yards to the north.
