NL De kerktoren van de Werenfriedkerk te Westervoort geldt als een RD-meetpunt. Punt 409352-01 betreft de stang boven de bol bovenin de oude kerktoren.

De kerk van de Protestantse Gemeente Westervoort draagt van oorsprong de naam Werenfriedkerk, niet te verwarren met de Roomskatholieke Sint Werenfriduskerk, die aan de Dorpsstraat 109 staat. Het monument ontleent zijn naam aan de Angelsaksische zendeling Werenfried die omstreeks 726 het christelijk geloof verkondigde in de Overbetuwe. De legende vertelt dat hij overleed in Westervoort, maar begraven werd in Elst. Een houten beeldje van Werenfried staat nog altijd in de Rk.-St Werenfridus kerk in Westervoort.

Misschien heeft Werenfried in Westervoort al een klein kerkje aangetroffen of er zelf een gesticht. In de 12de eeuw verrees in Westervoort, zoals elders langs Rijn, Waal en IJssel een tufstenen kerk in Romaanse bouwstijl. Tufsteen is een vulkanische, zachte en makkelijk te bewerken steensoort die uit de Eifel via Xanten werd aangevoerd. In 1350 kreeg deze kerk een toren. Begin 1400 begon de huidige Gotische bouwstijl zichtbaar te worden. De muren, nu doorbroken met hoge ramen, werden voorzien van smalle steunberen. Achterin de kerk vindt men nog de ‘hagioscoop’, de richel waardoor mensen die vanwege een besmettelijke ziekte niet aan de eucharistie konden deelnemen, de consecratie van buitenaf toch konden meebeleven. Tegen het einde van de 15e eeuw kreeg de kerk het huidige aanzien van pseudobasiliek. Het enige dat overbleef van de middeleeuwse kerk is het sacramentshuisje dat bij een latere restauratie werd teruggevonden in het koor. De Reformatie van de 16e eeuw liet de kerk leeg en kaal achter. Altaren, beelden, schilderingen, het werd allemaal vernield.

Eenmaal in handen van de Nederduits Gereformeerde kerk, later Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk, werd het gebouw in 1845 ingrijpend verbouwd en gerestaureerd. In de tweede wereldoorlog (1940-1945) roofde de Duitse bezetter de luidklok die pas in 1952 werd vervangen door een nieuw exemplaar. Granaatschade tegen het einde van de oorlog vernielde het dak van de kerk. De herstelwerkzaamheden begonnen in 1945. In 1957 werd opnieuw een belangrijke restauratie uitgevoerd. Bij deze restauratie vond men resten terug van de halfronde absis die had toebehoord aan de oude Romaanse kerk uit de 12de eeuw.

The church of the Protestant municipality of Westervoort originally bears the name Werenfriedkerk, not to be confused with the Roman Catholic Sint Werenfriduskerk, which is located at Dorpsstraat 109. The monument takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon missionary Werenfried who proclaimed the Christian faith in the Overbetuwe around 726. The legend tells that he died in Westervoort, but was buried in Elst. A wooden statue of Werenfried is still standing in the Rk.-St Werenfridus church in Westervoort.

Perhaps Werenfried has already found a small church in Westervoort or founded one himself. In the 12th century in Westervoort, as elsewhere along the Rhine, Waal and IJssel, a tuff stone church in Romanesque style was built. Tuff is a volcanic, soft and easy to work type of stone that was brought from the Eifel via Xanten. In 1350 this church got a tower. In the early 1400s, the current Gothic architectural style began to emerge. The walls, now pierced with high windows, were provided with narrow buttresses. At the back of the church you can still find the 'hagioscope', the ledge through which people who could not participate in the Eucharist due to an infectious disease, could still experience the consecration from the outside. Towards the end of the 15th century, the church acquired the current appearance of a pseudo-basilica. All that remains of the medieval church is the sacrament house that was found in the choir during a later restoration. The Reformation of the 16th century left the church empty and bare. Altars, statues, paintings, it was all destroyed.

Once in the hands of the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk, later the Dutch Reformed Church, the building was radically renovated and restored in 1845. In the Second World War (1940-1945) the German occupiers stole the bell, which was only replaced in 1952 by a new one. Shell damage towards the end of the war destroyed the roof of the church. Restoration work started in 1945. In 1957 another important restoration was carried out. During this restoration, remains of the semicircular apse that had belonged to the old Romanesque church from the 12th century were found.
