Newport Car Museum in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, exhibits a collection of over 90 vehicles from the mid-20th century onward. The museum's flag is its red and white logo centered on a solid black field. The horizontally divided emblem consists of two elements. A half tire and spoke wheel with a three bar knock-off in silhouette is on the left and a red vertical rectangle with white text in three lines - NPT | CAR | MUS - is paired to the right. It flew from a nautical flag pole by the main entrance walkway at the northwest side of the building the day of my visit.
The 80,000 square-foot museum exhibits automobiles from the middle of the 20th century to some of the latest -- and most expensive -- of today. Founded by Maggie and Gunther Buerman and opened in 2017, the private collection is presented in seven galleries: Corvette, Fin Cars, Ford/Shelby, MOPAR, Porsche, and "World Cars". The range encompasses an early Isetta, a 1954 Corvette, 1959 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, 1969 Dodge Charger R/T, 1979 Porsche 911 930 Turbo, 1997 Lamborghini Diablo, 2006 Bugatti Veyron, and a 2014 McLaren P1.
Guests can easily expect to spend a couple of hours exploring the cars up close - though you can't sit in them, photography is welcomed. Set among the vehicles is another collection: an eclectic mix of Mid-Century chairs and benches including iconic designs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Herman Miller/Eames, and Salvador Dali, all of which are available to try out whenever you need a rest.
