During the Middle Ages, the Republic of San Marino built three successive walls of fortification for protection from enemies. Each wall was built a little further out from the original fortification as the city grew. Most of these walls are gone now but remnants still remain and today, the historic city center along with all surviving fortifications are a UNESCO world heritage site.
The stamp shows a portion of the second wall which dates from the thirteenth century. There are two gates in this wall: the Porta della Murata Nuova (seen on the stamp), and the Porta della Fratta, located a little further up the hill. The scene today is actually the result of some twentieth-century renovation which preserved the wall as a historical monument but widened the gate to allow for better access. The stamp was part of a definitive series, but this same scene has appeared on several commemorative issues as well.
