Established in 1890, the organization which came to be known as the Pan American Union, was formed to foster economic and commercial cooperation among the American States and to provide a peaceful means of resolving any disputes that may arise between them. In 1940, this postage stamp was issued to celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary. As an allegory of the three Americas (North, Central and South) the stamp’s design incorporates another allegory: the Three Graces from the famous painting ‘La Primavera’ by Sandro Botticelli.
Painted in the late fifteenth century, the meaning of ‘La Primavera’ along with the circumstances under which it was commissioned remain shrouded in mystery (although theories abound). Nevertheless, ‘La Primavera’ and its companion ‘The Birth of Venus’ are two of the most famous paintings in the world. Throughout their history they have appeared together and that’s still true today as they both hang in the same room of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The Three Graces date to ancient Greek mythology and can represent various feminine virtues. The three in this painting are usually identified as Voluptas, Castitas, and Pulchritudo, three goddesses which allegorically represent pleasure, chastity and beauty.
