Located at 128 East Main St., Homer MI 49245 is the former Homer Fire Dept. building. It is a contributing building for the Homer Village Historic District. Its description from the
NRHP nomination form:
"This two story Italianate building was built in 1876 to house the fire fighting equipment and Council rooms for the village. Its construction was a direct result of a fire that had destroyed the entire block earlier in the year. The engine house was the first of a series of new brick buildings built on the block; the village had enacted a code after the fire that required all new building in the commercial district be of masonry construction. George McCartney was the builder; the Village appropriated $2,360 for the construction of the building. The engine house originally was topped by a belfry/hose tower. Dominating the facade is a modern overhead garage door, installed to replace the smaller, outward swinging door that had served the horse-drawn equipment. Pedestrian entry is served by a door on the west face of the building; this door has an arched transom and corbeled brick surrounds. Four windows light the second story; the center windows are paired. All have 2/2 double hung sash and have corbeled, round arch lintels. The cornice is highlighted by decorative corbeling, and capped by clay tile. There is a date stone between the first and second stories of the facade; it is of limestone and·contains the inscription: "erected 1876" carved in a rustic pattern. Historically, the engine house has been home to a number of activities, including various clubs and organizations as well as being a practice facility for the Homer Coronet Band. The building currently houses the Homer Fire Museum and is on the Michigan State Register of Historic Places."
