The Neo-Gothic style Maisel Synagogue stands on the site of a much older synagogue, which was established and paid for by wealthy businessman Mordecai Maisel.
Today, its whitewashed interior houses an exhibition on the history of the Jewish community in Prague until the emancipation in 1848. It contains a collection of religious artefacts such as hannukah candlesticks and scrolls.
Maisel Synagogue was built based on a privilege granted by Rudolf II as a private synagogue for Mordechai Maisel between 1590 and 1592, designed by Juda Coref de Herz. After a fire in 1689, it was reconstructed and renovated in 1864, and then again rebuilt between 1892 and 1905 in the Neo-Gothic style according to the design by Alfred Grott.
