Het Elisabeth Gasthuis (ook: Sint Elisabeths Gasthuis) is een voormalig ziekenhuis in de Nederlandse stad Arnhem. Het ziekenhuis is in 1878 gesticht door J.H. van Basten Batenburg als rooms-katholiek ziekenhuis. In 1893 maakte architect J.W. Boerbooms het ontwerp van het gebouw in neorenaissance stijl. Het ziekenhuis werd vernoemd naar de heilige Elisabeth van Thüringen, waarbij het medisch personeel langere tijd bestond uit Franciscaner nonnen uit Münster.
Tijdens de Slag om Arnhem stond het ziekenhuis midden in het strijdgebied, waardoor het een tijd in Britse handen was, maar daaropvolgend op 19 september 1944 weer werd heroverd door de Duitsers. Voor de ingang van het ziekenhuis hing de vlag van het Rode Kruis. In het ziekenhuis werd ten tijde van de slag doorgegaan met opereren van zowel Britse als Duitse troepen. Nadat de Duitsers het gasthuis definitief weer in handen hadden gekregen, werden de gewonde Britten krijgsgevangenen en later getransporteerd naar Apeldoorn. Evenwel werd op 24 september 1944 een twee uur durende wapenstilstand overeengekomen, waarbij gewonde Britse militairen naar het Elisabeths Gasthuis werden overgebracht. Zij werden eveneens krijgsgevangen gemaakt. Burgerpatiënten werden naar andere ziekenhuizen van Arnhem gebracht, waarbij zij eveneens de vlag van het Rode Kruis droegen. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog is het een pelgrimsoord geworden voor veteranen, nabestaanden en andere belangstellenden aangaande de Slag om Arnhem.
Fusies en herbestemming
In 1986 fuseerden het St. Elisabeths Gasthuis en het Gemeenteziekenhuis tot De Malberg en na de fusie met het Diaconessenhuis in 1988 ontstond hieruit Rijnstate. In 1995 werd de functie als ziekenhuis opgeheven, en werden na een renovatie appartementen in het gebouw gerealiseerd."

The Elisabeth Gasthuis (also: Sint Elisabeths Gasthuis) is a former hospital in the Dutch city of Arnhem. The hospital was founded in 1878 by J.H. van Basten Batenburg as a Roman Catholic hospital. In 1893, architect J.W. Boerbooms designed the building in Neo-Renaissance style. The hospital was named after Saint Elisabeth of Thüringen, with the medical staff consisting for a long time of Franciscan nuns from Münster.
During the Battle of Arnhem, the hospital was in the middle of the battle zone, which meant that it was in British hands for a while, but was subsequently recaptured by the Germans on 19 September 1944. The flag of the Red Cross hung in front of the entrance to the hospital. At the time of the battle, both British and German troops continued to operate in the hospital. After the Germans had finally regained control of the hospital, the wounded British became prisoners of war and were later transported to Apeldoorn. However, a two-hour armistice was agreed on September 24, 1944, during which wounded British soldiers were transferred to the Elisabeths Gasthuis. They were also made prisoners of war. Civilian patients were taken to other hospitals in Arnhem, where they also carried the flag of the Red Cross. After the Second World War, it became a place of pilgrimage for veterans, relatives and others interested in the Battle of Arnhem.
Mergers and repurposing
In 1986, the St. Elisabeths Gasthuis and the Municipal Hospital merged into De Malberg and after the merger with the Diaconessenhuis in 1988, Rijnstate was created. In 1995, the function as a hospital was discontinued, and apartments were realized in the building after a renovation."
