"Le pont qui enjambe la rivière de Pont l’Abbé et qui en fait une retenue d’eau est l’un des neuf ponts français dit habités encore sur pied. Construit au XIIe siècle, il donna son nom à la commune de Pont l’Abbé. Véritable monument emblématique de la ville, il se situe à proximité du Château de la commune.

Construit sous le nom de Pont Christ, ce pont est parvenu jusqu’à nous quasiment dans sa configuration d’origine. Il permet à la fois la circulation et l’habitation. On retrouve un tel ouvrage à Landerneau et à Narbonne.

Sa situation au fond du ria et au débouché de la rivière de Pont l’Abbé était stratégique. Il se situe au carrefour de plusieurs voies de commerce. Ce fut l’origine de l’émergence d’une cité.

Au XIIe siècle, selon la légende les abbés de Loctudy et les seigneurs de Pont Labbé décidèrent de construire un pont à l’emplacement du pont actuel. La cité prit alors son nom actuel. Construit comme un barrage, ce pont contribua au développement du commerce et des divers pèlerinages de la région. Il permettait aussi une meilleure circulation dans les quartiers de la ville de part et d’autre du ria.

Dès le départ le pont exploite la force hydraulique grâce à deux moulins à marée, l’un dépendant des abbés et l’autre du seigneur du château.

Au XIXe siècle, une grande minoterie s’installera sur le pont qui sera remplacée en 1936 par l’entreprise de broderie Minor. Aujourd’hui, les bâtiments ont été réhabilités en logements et en commerces." (visit link)
