In the James Bond movie ‘Diamonds are Forever,’ a boat tour guide is overheard explaining that this bridge was built by two sisters who lived on opposite sides of the Amstel River. Desiring to see each other more frequently they had this bridge built but ran out of money and could only afford a skinny one. Better scholarship suggests that it was actually the town that ran low on funds producing the narrow crossing. So much for getting your information from a James Bond movie.

In any event, the original 1691 structure (which was quite narrow) has been rebuilt and renovated on several occasions and the current bridge (which dates from the mid-1930s) is no longer notoriously skinny. Nevertheless, traffic on the bridge has been limited to bicycles and pedestrians since 2003. Also, the bridge’s mechanism for opening had been operated manually up until 1994 but has since been automated.

Another tale told about this bridge is that if two people kiss while on it, they will be in love forever. Consequently, the bridge has become a common site for marriage proposals.
