Kairouan is the holiest city in Africa and the fourth holiest in the world after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem (seven trips to Kairouan equal one visit to Mecca). It is the largest Islamic cultural center in the Maghreb.
This twinning, which took place 45 years ago,
Kairouan has been declared the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 2009.
The twinning had agricultural exchanges, textiles (leather), and cultures, since they have a mosque similar to the one in Córdoba.
