This statue, commonly called ‘Motherhood,’ is actually dedicated to the victims of the 26-June-1944 bombing of San Marino by the British which killed 63 people and destroyed the San Marino-Rimini Railroad. Apparently, some bad intelligence indicated that the Germans were using this railroad to transport troops and ammunition. Throughout World War II, San Marino had maintained neutrality. The railroad was never rebuilt.
The statue stands just outside the upper station of the Funivia, the aerial cable car of San Marino, where it greets visitors to the city. The stamp was part of a set of ten, each depicting a different piece of public sculpture.
