"Lac du Bouchet is a circular lake of volcanic origin located in the Haute-Loire department in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, in the municipalities of Cayres and Bouchet-Saint-Nicolas. It is located more precisely in the Devès massif (1,421 m) between the Loire and the Allier, 20 km south of Puy-en-Velay. The Lac du Bouchet has been a classified site since September 21, 1950. Since 1863, the lake has been the property of the Haute-Loire department, managed with the assistance of the National Forestry Office.
Geography
Training
Its formation results from a volcanic explosion 800,000 years ago at the top of the crater of a volcano identified at the end of the 18th century by Abbot Jean-Louis Giraud-Soulavie. During the eruption, the magma never reached the surface. It met the water table along a crack. This encounter caused a huge amount of overheated water like in a pressure cooker in larger proportions. The water trying to escape broke the lid of the volcanic rock. Numerous and violent explosions literally threw many pieces of rock out of the crater.
Many fiery clouds broke and destroyed the surroundings. Old lava flows and an old volcano, Mount Maillon, have been partially destroyed. This formed a vast crater with a depth of 100 meters. This crater is called maar, a name of German origin designating the crater lakes of the Eifel in the Rhineland. The deposits resulting from these explosions form rings around the crater. This crater was then occupied by a lake.
Characteristics of the lake:
- altitude: 1,205 m;
- area: 44 ha;
- circumference: 3 km;
- depth: 28 m.
Tourism
Lac du Bouchet is the most frequented natural site in the Haute-Loire. It is fed by rainwater, runoff from the catchment area and a few minor sub-lacustrine springs. The water level varies little (more or less 10 cm on average over the year). It is a privileged place for families, with a playground and picnic areas.
Trails
Two trails allow you to discover the geological, environmental and social particularities of the lake, with in particular the character of "Garou" who lived here in a large barrel during the 1960s.
Winter sports
The site is conducive to the practice of Nordic hiking (cross-country skis, snowshoes). In winter, a 5 km cross-country ski trail allows you to go around the lake along the ridges.
Fishing
Fishing is subdivided into general public fishing from January 1 to August 31, and sport fishing which is practiced between September 1 and December 31. These two activities are managed by agreement with the Departmental Federation for Fishing and the Protection of Aquatic Environments.
Scuba diving
Underwater diving is practiced under the control of the Vellave diving club which has signed an agreement with the General Council of Haute-Loire.
Swimming
Swimming is supervised every day from the second week of July until the end of August."
