The weblink to this article leads you to a 25 year timeline of volcanic activity on Mt. St. Helens that was published by the Associated Press on the 25th anniversery of its 1980 eruption.
Mt. St. Helens is a very active stratovolcano and was known as Louwala-Clough (smoking mountain) by the local native americans of the Klickitat tribe. It's most famous eruption was on May 18, 1980, but it has become very active in the last couple years and currently you can see several steam vents on the lava dome from the observatory. The steam from the largest vent can be seen in my photo. For the more athletic folks there are several trails from the observatory where you can get a closer look (check first to see if there are any restrictions due to volcanic activity). This location offers a pretty fantastic view though and it is accessible by wheelchair.
To reach the visitor center from I-5 take the Castle Rock exit. Follow the Spirit Lake Highway until it ends and you will be at the Johnston Observatory Visitor Center where this waymark was taken.
