The history of human occupation of Two Guns goes back as far as 1050 A.D. The town sits along Canyon Diablo and a cave in the canyon wall. Legend has it the Billy the Kid hid out here and that Apaches and the Navajo fought in the cave. Two guns, as a town didn't develop until the Old Trails highway came through. A bridge over the canyon was constructed in 1914-15. The highway was labeled U.S. Route 66 in the 1920's and the increase in traffic provided the impetus to develop tourist accommodations and attractions. The area had a service station, trading post, zoo, cabins and campgrounds. Then Interstate 40 bypassed the area and that doomed the town. All that remains is some dry-stone walls and the wind and the bridge.
