In 1992, the town of Tinley Park, a suburb of Chicago, celebrated their centennial. As a memorial monument, this locomotive was placed on permanent display near the current Metra train station. It was given the number 1892: the year the town voted to incorporate as the Village of Tinley Park. A locomotive was a good choice for the monument since the town owed much of its early prosperity to the railroads, in fact, the town was named after Samuel Tinley Sr., the community’s first railroad station agent.
The engine was built by the H. K. Porter Company of Pittsburgh, PA for Swift & Co., the meat packing giant of Chicago where it no doubt served many years switching Swift’s famous refrigerated railroad cars. As was typical for the food processing industry, this engine was “fireless,” running on steam delivered from a stationary boiler.
