Most of the Union soldiers interred here perished of disease, not injuries from combat. "The health here is so very bad," wrote Dr. James M. Bailey, a surgeon assigned to this camp. Camp Calhoun, like so many garrisons, was overcrowded, infested with rats, and rife with diseases like measles, typhoid, and pneumonia. The entire town of Calhoun became "a city of makeshift hospitals." The Courthouse, the Methodist Church, and many private homes were used as field hospitals here. A three-sided marker at the front of the cemetery relates some of the history of the camp.
