Sacremento, California is the capital of the Golden State. With a population of about two and a half million in its metropolitan area, it's the 26th-most populated urban area in the USA. Its history began when John Sutter Sr. first arrived in the area on August 13, 1839, at the divergence of the American and Sacramento Rivers with a Mexican land grant of 50,000 acres (20,000 ha). The next year, he and his party established Sutter's Fort. Sacremento was catapulted into the public eye when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill ten years later. When California became a state, Sacremento was selected as the capitol.
Sacremento, Kentucky, with a population of about five hundred, is somewhat more modest, but has a connection with the California city. The first community at the site was known as "Crossroads", but the Post Office established in 1852 was named "Social Hill". In 1854, George L. Helm platted the town and renamed it Sacramento. Local tradition holds the name was suggested by John Vickers, recently returned from the California Gold Rush. The city was incorporated on October 8, 1860, and the Post Office followed suit the next year. The town was the site of a skirmish during the Civil War in which Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, in his first engagement, routed a small Union force; the battle is the subject of an annual re-enactment.
