Is it a typo on the Woodmen of the World monument marking the final resting place of James Henry Bennett in historic Greathouse Cemetery in Temple, TX, or a reflection of regional pronunciation?

Mr. Bennett's final resting place is marked by a tree trunk monument placed by the Woodmen of the World. It's a standard model, and the inscription shield reads:

J.H.
Bennett

Born
Nov. 7, 1875

Died
Nov. 4, 1913

---

As a husband,
devoted, as a father
affectionate,
As a frind, ever
kind and true.

----------

It's likely that the sculptor just made a mistake. Leave it to the linguists to document spoken language if this was deliberate, something we'll never know.
