A Mark III RML 64 pounder 64 cwt gun is located at the cruise ship docking area of a former military base at Portland, UK. The cannon is mounted on a wood carriage that contains an aluminum plaque which is inscribed:
Mark III RML 64 pounder 64 cwt gun
This Mark III RML 64 pounder 64 cwt gun was made by
Woolwich Arsenal in London circa 1875. Manufactured from
wrought iron tube and weighing 3.3 tonnes, the gun had an
effective range of approximately 4600m.
These guns may have been fitted on board ships but were more
likely used in coastal defence duties around Portland and
Weymouth. At the end of their service, they were buried on
the inner breakwater quayside for use as bollards when
mooring ships, a common practice in naval dockyards.
