From the sign: "The buildings surrounding your are monuments to the hard work and fine craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Built in the 1930s to harmonize with local culture and landscape, this development follows an architectural style called Pueblo revival, a blend of structure and courtyard. From exterior walls to interior curtain rods, the CCC exercised great attention to detail. Today the buildings and their surroundings are designated a National Historic Landmark District.
"The CCC program offered some three million single, jobless young men work revitalizing America during the Great Depression. Hundreds of such men worked at Bandelier from 1933-1941 mending fences, building roads and trails, eradicating tent caterpillars, and constructing buildings."
