The history of the church of San Pablo runs parallel to the urban evolution of Malaga and more specifically to that of the Trinidad neighborhood, place of its settlement. A neighborhood that emerged in the 16th century, through a linear grid of architectural design and organized in the shadow of the path of a camp that was transformed into the Trinidad barracks. Its lands had fruitful orchards, permanently irrigated when the city river collected the waters of the basin. The specific origin of the tempo is somewhat confusing according to the different existing sources of information. Its initial revival is linked to the evolutionary development of the Trinidadian neighborhood. It is not conceived as a large ecclesiastical monument, but as a hermitage that will develop its cults and initiate the base of the fervor and devotion of a humble neighborhood. On June 29, 1648, under the pontificate of Alonso de la Cueva y Carrillo, the Cathedral Chapter decided to convert the hermitage to help the parish of Santos Mártires, on which it would depend for centuries. The foundations of the brotherhoods of the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Conception, San Antonio Abad and Santa Cruz y Rosario date from this date. On April 2, 1726, it was officially declared dependent on the Santos Mártires, but it was not proclaimed a parish until 1833 by the prelate Juan José Bonel y Orbe. Neo-Gothic in style, the architectural style of the work responds to the original design of Jerónimo Cuervo after the commission made in 1873 by the then parish priest Francisco Vega Gutiérrez. Between the demolition of the old church in precarious conditions after the 1775 earthquake and the completion of the new one, eighteen years elapsed, being blessed with great solemnity by the Malacitan prelate Marcelo Spínola y Maestre. The new building was a point of reference for the evolution of the neighborhood in terms of its urban growth and popular development. It stands out for being the most monumental work in the neighborhood and for its tall tower. The architect chose the neo-Gothic style to base his project on because it was the most identifiable of 19th century eclecticism in Malaga and above all because it allowed the most design freedom, a concept that he passionately defended from the perspective of the artist who seeks perfection and the glory of his creation.
