This is one of four Arkansas Historical Markers at the Caddo Gap Indian statue; this one is at the southwest corner of the monument. All four markers have the same text on both sides. These markers and a plaque on the monument itself tell the story of how Spanish conquistador Hernando DeSoto encountered and fought Tula Indians here, and some history of the area and of the town itself.
MARKER TEXT:
In this area in 1541 a Spanish expedition from Florida commanded by Hernando De Soto encountered fierce resistance from the Indians whom they described as the best fighting men they had met. De Soto then turned to the southeast and descended the Caddo and Ouachita Rivers into what is now Louisiana where he died.
