The river Don, like its southern neighbour the Dee, is synonymous with the city of Aberdeen in north-east Scotland. The salmon and trout river rises in the eastern Cairngorms and flows for 81 miles in a general easterly direction from the mountains through rural Aberdeenshire, passing the small towns of Alford and Kemnay before skirting the south of the larger town of Inverurie and its tributary the River Ury. From here it passes Kintore and Dyce before marking the northern edge of Aberdeen. It heads between the city and its northern suburb, Bridge of Don, named after the final crossing before reaching its destination half a mile downstream.
It reaches the North Sea at the Donmouth Nature Reserve at the northern end of the two and a half mile Aberdeen Beach. Co-ordinates are from the southern point of the river mouth, and parking co-ordinates are from the Esplanade where a path through the grass heads north-east.
