The morning drizzle contrasted with the warm tribute that the city paid to the late president of the Málaga Winter Bathers Club, José Morante, on Malagueta beach. Friends, relatives and a representation of the political class headed by the mayor, Francisco de la Torre, discovered a plaque in memory of a lover of the land.
It was only necessary to pay attention to the comments of the attendees to draw a sketch of the personality of a protagonist who, although absent -he passed away two years ago- was very present in everyone's memory. "He was a man who loved his land, he made drawings on the shells that he found on the beach and gave them away, he also made some paintings with them in the Naif style that were precious," commented the journalist and friend, Gonzalo Fausto.
As a lover of the Piscasian capital, he founded the Peña de Bañistas de Málaga. "I wanted to emphasize that Malaga was a unique city blessed by the sun, where you could bathe all year round. It was incredible to see him in the dead of winter in his swimsuit, playing cymbal and showing off about the city." His wife, Concepción Hernández, children and grandchildren were very emotional during the ceremony.
After everyone's memory, the mayor unveiled a plaque to pay tribute to the figure of José Morante. "Today an ambassador of the land is being honored, a defender of what he called 'malagañear' and in a place where he felt happy, La Malagueta beach," concluded the mayor. Between hugs and anecdotes about the protagonist, a very emotional morning ended.
