On the death of the Marquise de Reynel in 1791, the castle of Chantereine became national property to accommodate the 44th infantry regiment of Hussars.

It was returned in 1804 to the heirs, including Mesdemoiselles Grimaldi de Monaco. During the 14-18 war, it hosted a school of Belgian machine gunners.

The Amiens cooperative society, “l'Union”, which became the owner in 1930, transformed it into a summer camp, attended by 1,600 children each summer. As early as 1939, Spanish Republican refugees fled the Franco regime and civil war. This is the "Retirada". Faced with the arrival of nearly a million people, the French authorities decided to organize the reception of the refugees by dispersing them throughout the France. 546 Spaniards (313 women, 205 children and 28 men) were housed in this castle from April 1939 to April 1940.

In 1984, the castle of Chantereine was bought by the municipality of Criel-sur-Mer.
