The building in which the on High Street in South Glastonbury Public Library is housed was built in 1828 Parley Bidwell as a Methodist Church. In the 1860s it was used for African-American services and abolitionist rallies. The building was sold in 1910 and used as a church only during the summer months. In 1927 the building was owned by Helen Walsh Thompson, who allowed it to be used as a library. She gave the building to South Glastonbury Library Association in 1941. Today the library is operated by volunteers.
Federal style brick building has a gable roof and two entrances with fan windows separated by a brick arch which extended into a pediment. The upper part of the arch has a 5 by 8 pane double hung window with a fan top. The sides of the building are four bays deep. Each bay has a a 5 by 8 pane double hung window.
The South Glastonbury Public Library is listed on National Register of Historic Places as a contributing building to the South Glastonbury Historic District.
