In 2011, Borussia Dortmund became another German soccer club to agree a partnership with a solar energy company. Q-Cells, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of solar energy products, installed photo-voltaic panels to the roof of Borussia Dortmund's 80,720 capacity home Signal Iduna Park as part of a five-year deal worth a reported US$12.96 Million at the time. Around two million euros were invested in the PV solar modules, which are intended to provide green electricity. In this way, sport and environmental protection can be well combined.

Around 9,000 photovoltaic modules were installed on the roofs of the north, west and east stands. This means that the sun can be optimally captured and a peak output of 924 kW p can be achieved. The stadium roof can produce around 830,000 kWh of environmentally friendly solar power annually. Converted, this corresponds to a value of 240,000 euros. In other words, around 210 households could cover their annual electricity needs with this.

The solar power is only partially fed into the public grid, because the stadium's own consumption is covered by the panels. In the stadium, the electricity is mainly needed for the lawn solarium, which requires a lot of electricity. The lawn in the stadium is irradiated with UV light by the device. But when the weather is sunny, the PV system in Dortmund will produce much more electricity than can be consumed in the stadium. On these days, a particularly large amount of solar power is fed into the public power grid. That means more green electricity for Dortmund and less harmful CO2 emissions for the atmosphere.

The panels are on the roof of the West, East and North stands, with the team logo being patterned in solar panels on the North stands.

The solar panels are on the roof, making ordinary photography by visitors impossible. I am submitting a public domain photo. As of late May 2023, the panels are still in place (I watched a soccer game on TV and saw the panels).
Type of system: Photovoltaic (electrical)
