First, I must say that the First Presbyterian Church of Austin has an active congregation. I pulled into the parking lot a little after 12 o'clock noon and by the time I found the labyrinth the lot was filling up fast. Another factor convincing me this is an active group is that of the (approximate) 33 labyrinths I have been to and have either Visited or Posted (as of this posting date), THIS labyrinth is the only one where I had to wait my turn to walk the labyrinth!! By the time I walked from my vehicle to the labyrinth, a lady had stepped into the pathway. I sat at a bench nearby to wait my turn. When she completed her journey, I stepped in and walked to the center and back out as I normally do. But, as I was on my last few steps to exit the labyrinth, two moms with two young boys arrived at the labyrinth and began to walk the path ... as well as young 5-6 year old boys would walk it! I had to smile on my way through the parking lot. Not only were there people walking this labyrinth before me, but people began walking it right after me. I've not seen so much activity at a labyrinth before this experience.
The labyrinth itself is a rustic design with a dirt and gravel mix for the pathway and rectangular white stone bricks as edging. This labyrinth is of medium size, about 45 feet in a round classic pattern, with 11 narrow circuits. There are cedar trees growing around the edge of about half of the labyrinth. The other half was open to either a small field of grass and wildflowers or looked out into the back parking area. There are signs placed to guide you toward the labyrinth from the parking area.
The pathway to the labyrinth's center is designed to complement the concept that walking a labyrinth allows you to meditate and release your tensions and worries on the way in. At the center, you can leave those frustrations there and can return on the same path back with a more relaxed attitude of hope and contentment.
