St. George is the patron saint of the UK and there is a statue of him above the entrance.
The building is a Historic England Grade II Listed Building and their website indicates that it was the first important building in Manchester to be built in re-inforced concrete, and the first major use in Britain of the Kahn reinforced-concrete system. The original internal arrangement was modelled on New York YMCA.

This was the Manchester YMCA building and as such came equipped with a running track, gymnasium and swimming pool. Benefitting from the developments in reinforced concrete it had been possible to locate the swimming pool near the top of the building.

Above the door of the main entrance is a carving of the very first logo for YMCA that was created in 1881 and is still used by the organization as the secondary version. It is an ornate and detailed circular badge with the image of an open Bible in the center, enclosed in a thick brake frame with the “Americae Asia Europa Oceania Africa” inscription in a bold serif font placed on it.
