Part of the story is based on the Bow family and includies a game called Beatie Bow.

The Bow's Confectionery Shop is located on the corner of Cambridge Street and The Argyle Cut. At this location now is a small shop, Parkers Fine Arts.

The story was written by Ruth Park and became a popular children's and young people's novel based around changing family relationships. It has many locations around The Rocks at the centre of the story. The Argyle Cut is a well known location giving access from Millers Point to the west and The Rocks in the East.

The story has been adapted to both screen and stage and is popular in Sydney because of its links to this location.
