About one and a half kilometers west-southwest of the manor house, a 19th-century lookout tower called the Hessenstein rises on the 128-meter-high Pilsberg, an upsetting moraine. The polygonal tower in neo-Gothic style was erected from 1839 to 1841 and is seventeen meters high. A cast-iron spiral staircase leads up to the viewing platform, which is surrounded by a battlement and offers a view from Kiel's shipyards over the Laboe Naval Memorial to the Baltic Sea as far as Hohwachter Bay and the Great Inland Sea. On a clear day, the view extends to Schwansen and Fehmarn as well as the Danish islands of Als and Ærø. The Bungsberg can be seen in a southeasterly direction through a lane between the surrounding trees. The tower adorns Panker's coat of arms and was the first in a series of similar lookout towers in Schleswig-Holstein, such as the Elisabethturm on the Bungsberg or the Parnaß-Turm near Plön.
