The plaque on the wall reads:
"Detention building ("bunker"), built in 1937.
The camp prison, also known as the bunker, was the worst place of torture in Buchenwald concentration camp. From February 1938, the cells were occupied by prisoners who sometimes had to remain there for months. For many, the torture ended in death. In cell 1, people spent their last hours before being sent to the crematorium."

Information on the website (
visit link) of KZ Buchenwald reads:
"To the left and right of a narrow central corridor were a total of 26 cells in the detention cell building. The cells, which were about two meters long and 1.40 meters wide, could be heated and darkened separately. From 1938 on, they were always full.
Incarceration was arbitrary. Just about any action could be classified as resistance or sabotage. The official list of punishments for confinement - 3 to 42 days in the cell, individually or in groups, standing during the day, without opportunity to lie down or sit, also as dark confinement and generally on water and bread - was only considered a guideline. In fact, the ordeal in the cramped cells often lasted months and ended in death for many.
The SS guards tortured on their own initiative or by order. They tortured people, hung them from the bars or murdered them with injections. In cell 1, people spent their last hours before being hanged in the basement of the crematorium."
