"On April 19, 1945, on the initiative of former political prisoners from various European countries, a memorial service was held for those murdered at Buchenwald concentration camp. Survivors erected a temporary memorial for this purpose at the roll call square. In a declaration in Russian, Polish, English, French, Czech and German, the assembly pledged to overcome all manifestations of national socialism and to stand up for a peaceful world."
