The text next to the photo reads:

"April 23 1945, photo taken by Sergeant Sutler, 167th Signal Photographic Company.
When US-American troops arrived at the Buchenwald Concentration Camp on April 11 1945, they found hundreds of corpses, many of them were piled in the courtyard of the crematorium."
------

"The crematorium, completed in 1940, had, in addition to the incineration room, a dissection room and a pathology room for breaking out gold teeth. The first incinerators were delivered by the Erfurt company Topf & Söhne as early as December 1939, and additional ovens were delivered and installed by the company until spring 1941. Many prisoners were killed on wall hooks in the cellar. It is presumed that Ernst Thälmann, the chairman of the Communist Party (KPD), who had been imprisoned since 1933 and transported to Buchenwald, was shot here at the entrance to the oven room on Adolf Hitler's direct orders during the night of August 17-18, 1944."
