"The town of Füchtenfeld, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2008, lies with its approximately 700 inhabitants in the municipality of Wietmarschen.
In 1937, a Reich labor camp was established in the heath with the aim of cultivating the heath. About 10,000 young workers and 11,000 prisoners were to be housed there.
However, this project was stopped after the beginning of the war. As early as 1941, the barracks were then used to house mainly Russian prisoners of war.
On 19.09.1941, Camp XIII Wietmarschen was occupied by 2,700 Soviet POWs. After the war, these camps were restored to cope with the immense flow of refugees in Bentheim County. It was the first emergency shelter for some refugees.
In 1946, the county council officially designated the village "Füchtenfeld" ("wet field") based on the wet heath. Thus a village emerged from the heath.
At that time, teacher Schmidt and his disciples planted hedges of small birch trees, which they took from the heath. Sometimes up to 1,100 displaced people lived in the barracks camp. The first housing estates were relocated in 1952. Due to the oil industry in Osterwald and Alte Piccardie, many families found a new livelihood. On the initiative of Messrs. Schmidt, Ernst Schmidt and Pastor Wille, Plan Füchtenfeld was created as a district of Wietmarschen. The barracks clearance program later created one - and two - single-family homes.
Today, the Füchtenfeld district is a neat, well-maintained place where young and old feel at ease. Especially in recent years, there has been lively construction activity in the new residential areas."
